Alert the population about the growing number of cases of sextoning, a crime of blackmail after the so-called "sexting" (sharing of intimate content on websites and smartphone applications), the British authorities launched an awareness video Wednesday.

The number of "sex-sex" cases more than doubled in one year in the UK, from 385 to 864 registrations between 2015 and November 2016, according to the National Crime Agency (NCA).

The so-called "sextorsão" is the blackmail that induces people to expose themselves sexually without knowing that they are being filmed.
A false identity is used to persuade someone to undress or engage in some sexual act, and then the person behind the crime threatens to disclose the content in exchange for money.

According to police, four men committed suicide in the country in 2016 after suffering the crime. NCA said it believed the number of victims was much higher and that many simply did not complain.
About 95% of sextons victims are male, according to the NCA. The victims are between 14 and 82 years old, but the main target is the group between the ages of 21 and 30.

Suicidal thoughts

A British teenager from the Hampshire area was blackmailed after attending online dating sites.

"She invited me to talk on the webcam, she looked the same as her profile picture. The video lasted between 30 and 45 minutes, all over the phone. She said, 'Show me some more, show your face,' "he told the BBC.

"Then there were messages saying 'Pay 500 pounds or this goes to social networks,' listing all the contacts of my friends."

Gary said he worried about what would happen if the video were published - he was afraid of losing his job. "I thought about suicide, it would be very embarrassing," he said.

Instead, Roy Sinclair, NCA investigations manager, the initial reaction to being silent is commonplace. "This is because victims often feel ashamed, but obviously criminals rely on this reaction to get what they want," he told the BBC.

Last year, more than 40 people were arrested in the Philippines in connection with sextorvention cases. There is an international investigation into this year's suicides.
